A woman in Las Vegas was out one day running errands, minding her own business, when her pocketbook was stolen. Like most women, it contained her drivers license, credit cards and other valuables.

She had to put aside the range of emotions she was feeling, from shock to disbelief, from anger to rage, to begin the process of notifying the credit card companies. It wasn’t easy, but finally the last call was made and after getting a new driver’s license the next day she began the process of putting this behind her and moving on with her life.

Everything got back to normal and she went about her family life like most of us do. Things continued to run smooth for a couple months until one day her daughter had to be taken to the hospital.

Mom gave them her insurance company information and thought everything would be alright. A short time later, she was informed that her insurance had been cancelled.

Her mind began to race through the possibilities of how this could happen. Then it hit her like a load of bricks. Her insurance card had been in her purse when it was stolen, but it still didn’t make sense. How could that lead to her insurance being cancelled?

She found out later that the thief had taken her insurance card and had received a test for AIDS. The test came back positive and the insurance company immediately cancelled her policy.

She had become a victim of Identity Theft, the fastest growing crime today. There are several forms of it and this particular one is Medical Identity Theft.
